🌱 The tradition of Boon Khao Sak 2026 falls on Saturday, September 26, 2026
which corresponds to the 15th waxing moon of the 10th lunar month in the Thai lunar calendar

They say... the meaning of Boon Khao Sak: or what is called "Boon Duean Sip"
It is one of the Hit Sip Song of the Isaan people

The purpose is: to make merit by giving alms and offering salakaphat to dedicate merit to deceased relatives and pretas or spirits without relatives

The main ceremony at our home is: prepare savory and sweet food, khao sak (puffed rice, rice crackers, rice grains mixed with sugarcane and coconut water) wrapped in banana leaves with names written on salak, placed in alms bowls for monks and novices to draw lots and receive the food set, taking the wrapped khao sak to place and announce around the temple area or rice fields (sae phi ta haek)

At our home in Nong Chim, the villagers also went to the temple as they do every year. Today the weather was a bit cold with drizzling rain soaking everything. The villagers from each household woke up to prepare savory and sweet food for morning alms (jang han) and prepared to go yai khao sak in the late morning (local dialect). Today we also went to the temple and prepared to go yai khao sak at the rice field for the phi na, phi ta haek, and deceased ancestors to look after the fields, look after the rice to grow well and flourish abundantly (the belief of Isaan villagers). Just like every year.
